McCloud information

When the Government reformed public service pension schemes in 2014 and 2015, it introduced protections for older members.

In December 2018, the Court of Appeal ruled that younger members of the Judges' and Firefighters' pension schemes had been discriminated against because the protections do not apply to them.

The Local Government Pension Scheme rules changed on 1 October 2023 to remove this discrimination. More information about what this decision will mean for LGPS members can be found at on the national website for the Local Government Pension Scheme.

Information is also available on the government website in The McCloud judgment and your LGPS pension (Factsheet), see: GOV.UK: Local Government Pension Scheme - amendments to the statutory underpin.

It is important to remember that any change may only affect those members who were active on 31 March 2012.

You do not need to do anything or register a claim. If you are in scope of the changes and your benefits have been affected, then we will contact you directly.
